Communication Activity: Butterfly Catching Game Directions

Directions to Play Butterfly Catching Communication Game

  1. Place all of the pieces “butterfly side up/conversation side down” on the floor.
  2. Select a player to go first.
  3. The player selects the butterfly of his choice, views the conversation side, and shows it to the group/family.
    • If you are playing the more interactive version of this game (with the magnet) have the player use his magnetic fishing pole to “catch a butterfly.”  Whichever butterfly piece sticks to the magnet is the piece used.
  4. The player then initiates a conversation on this topic*
  5. Once the players have completed their conversation, the player to the left goes next.  Play continues until everyone has had a turn.

*Conversation

This game can be utilized to practice multiple communication skills.  Prior to beginning, think about what skills you want to practice and structure your game accordingly.  Pick the conversation pieces that best complement the skills you want to work on and do not forget to consider your child’s ability level when structuring how the game will be played.  Here are some examples:

  • If you are working on getting a child with limited verbal abilities to speak, they may be instructed to identify the conversation topic/photo.
  • If you are working on reciprocal conversation (talking back and forth) you may try:If you are practicing expression of feelings, you can have the player define the feeling, share a memory, or tell a story about that feeling.
    • Have the child make at least one statement and then pose a question to another player about the topic. Have that player respond to the question and then pose a question back to the player that asked the question. Allow for 2-3 exchanges in conversation (you can also decide on another amount prior to beginning the game) before the player’s turn ends.
  • If you are practicing expression of feelings, you can have the player define the feeling, share a memory, or tell a story about that feeling.

Game Portability

  • Place the pieces in a bowl or bag and have players reach in to select a butterfly piece.  This allows the game to be more portable.  It can then be played while a parent is making dinner in the kitchen, at the dinner table, or in the car.
